At BETA Center it's just like living in a large family, there is
some room-sharing. And just like living in a family, this physical
intimacy facilitates peer-to-peer support and friendship. The bedroom
suites can accommodate four pregnant women or two young, "minor"
mothers with their children. A common kitchen and pantry stays clean
thanks to each resident's responsibilities for household chores.
Residents do their own grocery shopping and cooking. There is also
a great-room with a TV, computer and children's play area where
residents spend some leisure time and receive visitors. House-mothers
provide support 24-hours a day. For many of these young women, BETA's
residential program is their first experience in living in a safe
and nurturing home environment.
Minors With Minors
"Minors with Minors" is a program within the Residential
Program to address the specific needs of teen mothers 17 and younger
who have chosen to parent their child. This program provides transitional
housing for up to 18 months for mother and child. Young mothers
receive the support they need for their new role as mom. BETA Center
staff is always close at hand, and therefore able to monitor the
parent and child interactions, and address any difficulties right
away. "Minors with Minors" clients participate in all
of the residential program services with the additional support
of the parent/child labs. Counseling continues to be provided to
these young mothers, and often to their extended families.
