BETA Center provides parents and youth with educational and support
services that build upon their existing strengths, and provide services
that build stronger, healthier communities.
Why do some children succeed in school while others become involved
in risky and dangerous behaviors? Why are America's youth involved
in alcohol, sex, illicit drugs and violence activities? How do we
change statistics like 25% of 8th graders admit to being intoxicated
at least once? Every child is at risk, regardless of their family's
economic status.
BETA Center knows that prevention works, and it needs to start
early. We utilize the Search Institute's Developmental Asset Approach.
The concept is quite simple, by giving children more positive resources
they will be able to refuse opportunities to engage in negative
behaviors. When we build "assets" in youth, we are helping
youth build a brighter future for themselves.
ABC's for Youth are Asset Building Classes
for elementary-age youth. BETA Center helps youth build self-esteem,
conflict resolution skills and anger management skills. BETA Center's
staff goes into area schools to conduct 8 to 10 weeks of group sessions.
We work with entire classrooms or with a selected group of struggling
students. Our curriculum includes the use of crafts and role-playing
to help students tackle tough issues.
